What to plan for in West Palm Beach
Aircraft, lawn crews and season
- Aircraft: Palm Beach International is about three miles from downtown, and departing jets pass low over the city. Expect to hold for planes at a lot of exterior locations.
- Lawn crews and pool pumps: home and estate shoots come with leaf blowers, mowers and pool equipment, often next door. I listen to the location before we commit to a setup, and anything that can be shut off during takes gets shut off.
- Season: winter is the busy time here, with spring training in West Palm Beach and Jupiter, the equestrian season in Wellington and golf everywhere. Book early from January through March.
- Beach wind and afternoon storms: mornings are calmer on the beach, and summer storms build most afternoons. Exteriors first, interiors after lunch. What Florida does to a shoot day →
The math on hiring Tampa-based sound
Mileage, not airfare
- Travel past 50 miles from Tampa is billed at the standard federal mileage rate. That is still far cheaper than flying a mixer into PBI with gear cases, a rental car and per diem.
- Multi-day South Florida shoots are routine; I keep lodging costs low and the invoice simple.
- Complete professional package on every job: Sound Devices 833, wireless lavs, boom mics, jam-synced timecode, IFB and redundant recording. Full gear list →
