Frequently asked questions

Where are you based and what areas do you cover?

I'm based in Tampa and cover the whole state of Florida. The Tampa Bay area (roughly a 50-mile radius) is my home base with no travel fee, and I'm the go-to sound mixer for productions statewide — I regularly travel to Orlando, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Jacksonville, Sarasota and Fort Myers. For shoots past 50 miles, travel is billed at the standard federal mileage rate — still far cheaper than flying a mixer in from out of state.

Are you a sound mixer, a sound recordist, or a boom operator?

All of the above — those are different names for the same job. I'm a production sound mixer and location sound recordist (some people just say sound mixer, sound recordist, boom operator, production sound, or “the sound guy”). On a typical Florida shoot I mix, record, run wireless lavs and a boom, and deliver clean audio to the camera and client.

What kinds of productions do you record sound for?

Documentary, ENG and broadcast (news, sports, reality and magazine TV), and commercial and corporate work. I've worked full-time since 2008 — over 18 years — and recorded thousands of broadcast television productions for networks including ESPN, ABC, HBO, Discovery and many more.

Do you provide your own sound equipment?

Yes. My package is a complete, professional location sound rig: a Sound Devices 833 mixer/recorder, Sound Devices A20 and Sanken COS-11 wireless lavs, Sanken, Schoeps and Sennheiser boom mics, jam-synced Tentacle Sync timecode, and redundant recording on every job. I also carry Lectrosonics IFB and other extras — those are on my rate card and added when a shoot calls for them.

Can you sync timecode and provide IFB for the client and director?

Yes. Jam-synced Tentacle Sync timecode to every camera is standard on every shoot. IFB — a wireless feed so the client, director and reporter hear exactly what's being recorded — is one of the extras on my rate card; I always have it on hand and add it when a shoot needs it.

How do I book you, and what's the fastest way to reach you?

Texting is fastest: 813-716-8826. You can also call that number or email Joe@floridasoundman.com.

What does it cost?

Rates depend on the production: the length of the shoot, crew size and what gear you need. Text me the details and I'll get you a quote the same day.
